You've got the 12 notes, the grid, and scales and keys. This lesson is the hinge of the whole course — the idea that turns "a list of notes" into "music that does something": the interval.
An interval is simply the distance between two notes. That's the entire definition. But once you can hear and name a few of them, everything downstream — chords, melodies, basslines, harmony — stops being mysterious. Because all of those things are just intervals stacked up or laid out in time.
Why intervals, and not just notes?
The key realization: the emotion in music doesn't live in individual notes; it lives in the relationships between them. A single note is neutral. Two notes a certain distance apart sound bright and stable; the same two notes a slightly different distance apart sound tense or sad. Your ear responds to the gap, not the notes themselves.
This is also why the major-scale recipe from Lesson 3 worked from any starting note — what matters is the spacing, the intervals, not the absolute pitches.
Measuring intervals: count the steps
We measure intervals in half steps (the smallest distance, remember — one key to the next). From any note, counting up:

You don't need all of these memorized today. But three of them are worth burning into your brain because they do most of the work in music.
The big three
The octave (12 half steps). You already know it — double the frequency, same note higher. It's the most consonant interval there is; two notes an octave apart sound like one fuller note.
The perfect 5th (7 half steps). Open, strong, slightly hollow. It's the most stable interval after the octave, which is why power chords in rock and metal are just a root note plus its 5th — no third, so they're neither happy nor sad, just powerful. The 5th is also the backbone of how keys relate to each other (that's Lesson 7).
The 3rd — major or minor. This is the most emotionally important interval in Western music, full stop. The difference between a major 3rd (4 half steps) and a minor 3rd (3 half steps) — a single half step — is the entire difference between happy and sad.
Consonance and dissonance: tension and release
Intervals fall on a rough spectrum:
- Consonant intervals (octaves, 5ths, 3rds) sound stable, resolved, "at rest." They're where music wants to land.
- Dissonant intervals (minor 2nds, tritones) sound tense, unstable, "unfinished." They create the pull that makes you want resolution.
Neither is good or bad — music is the art of moving between tension and rest. Dissonance isn't a mistake; it's a tool. A track that's all consonance is boring; a track that's all dissonance is exhausting. The interplay is the point, and it's something we'll come back to with chords and progressions.
Training your ear (the actually-useful skill)
Naming intervals on paper is trivia. Hearing them is a real, trainable superpower — it's what lets you figure out a melody you have in your head, or know which note will sound right before you play it. The trick most musicians use: anchor each interval to a song you know.
- Octave → the first two notes of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."
- Perfect 5th → the opening of the Star Wars theme.
- Major 3rd → the first two notes of "When the Saints Go Marching In."
- Perfect 4th → "Here Comes the Bride."
Hear the gap, match it to the song, name the interval. Do this for a week and you'll start recognizing intervals in music automatically. (We have a whole guide on ear training games for producers if you want to drill it.)
