Notes are only half of music — the other half is when they happen. Lesson 2 of Fundamentals breaks down beat, tempo, bars, and note divisions using the one thing every producer already stares at: the grid.

In Lesson 1 we covered which notes exist. This lesson is about the other half of music — arguably the more important half for modern production: when the notes happen. That's rhythm.

If you've ever placed a drum hit on a step sequencer or quantized a recording, you already understand rhythm intuitively. This lesson just gives names to the things you're already seeing on the grid, so you can talk about them, fix them, and bend them on purpose.

The beat: the pulse you'd tap your foot to

Put on any song and tap your foot. That steady pulse you naturally land on is the beat. It's the heartbeat of the track — the thing a crowd claps along to. Everything in the rhythm is measured against it.

Most popular music groups beats into sets of four: 1, 2, 3, 4 — 1, 2, 3, 4. Each group of four is called a bar (or "measure"). When a producer says "an 8-bar loop," they mean a phrase that's eight of those groups long. The grid in your DAW is literally drawing these bars and beats for you — the big lines are bars, the smaller lines inside are beats.

Tempo: how fast the beats come

Tempo is the speed of the beat, measured in BPM — beats per minute. 120 BPM means 120 beats happen every minute, or two beats every second. Higher BPM = faster, more urgent. Lower = slower, heavier.

You don't have to guess at genre tempos, but rough landmarks help your ear:

Feel / genre Typical tempo
Hip-hop / boom bap ~80–95 BPM
Trap (the feel is half-time) ~130–150 BPM
House / pop ~120–128 BPM
Drum & bass ~170–175 BPM

These aren't rules, just starting points. The key insight: tempo sets the whole character of a track before you've written a single note. The same drum pattern at 90 BPM versus 140 BPM is two completely different songs.

Note divisions: slicing the beat

Here's where the grid earns its keep. A single beat can be split into smaller, even pieces — and these divisions are the rhythmic vocabulary of every pattern you'll ever make.

  • A quarter note (1/4) = one beat. In 4/4, four of them fill a bar. This is the steady "four-on-the-floor" kick in house music: one kick per beat.
  • An eighth note (1/8) = half a beat. Two per beat, eight per bar. Count them "1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and." This is the classic hi-hat pace.
  • A sixteenth note (1/16) = a quarter of a beat. Four per beat, sixteen per bar. Those rapid hi-hat rolls and skittering trap patterns? Sixteenths (and faster).

Where the magic actually lives: off the beat

If everything landed exactly on the beat, music would feel like a metronome — stiff and lifeless. The feel, the groove, comes from what happens between the beats.

  • Syncopation is emphasizing the off-beats — the "ands" between the numbers. It's why funk, reggae, and most great basslines feel like they're pushing and pulling instead of marching. A note that hits just before the expected beat creates anticipation; one that hits just after creates a laid-back drag.
  • Swing nudges every other subdivision slightly late, turning a robotic straight pattern into something that bounces. Most DAWs have a swing or "groove" knob — that's it adjusting exactly how late the off-beats land.

You don't have to compose these by hand. But knowing that "groove = deliberate placement relative to the beat" turns swing and syncopation from happy accidents into tools you reach for on purpose.

Rests: the notes you don't play

One last piece, and it's the one beginners underuse: silence is rhythm too. A rest is a gap where no note plays. The space between hits is as important as the hits — it's what gives a beat room to breathe. A busy pattern with no rests sounds cluttered; the same pattern with strategic gaps sounds intentional and punchy. When a mix feels "too full," the fix is often fewer notes, not more.

What you actually need to remember
