Clean digital audio is easy to make and easy to forget. What separates a sterile loop from a sound with attitude is usually texture: harmonics that weren't there before, resolution thrown away on purpose, a bed of noise under the mix, a moment frozen into a pad, or time itself running backwards. Those are the tricks that make a track feel alive — grit that reads as loudness, grain that reads as character, movement that pulls the listener from one section into the next.

This guide covers five browser tools that do exactly that: Distortion for warmth through fuzz, Bitcrush for 8-bit crunch, the Noise Generator for white/pink/brown beds, Freeze / Drone for glassy ambient pads, and Reverse for backwards textures and reverse-reverb swells. All five are free, run entirely in your browser with nothing uploaded — your file never leaves your device — and work in a mobile browser with nothing to install. Distortion: overdrive, fuzz, and edge

A little distortion is the difference between a clean sound and a sound with attitude. Saturation thickens, overdrive pushes, and fuzz tears the top off — all of it makes a track feel louder and more present. The Distortion tool goes from a gentle warm-up to a wall of grit with two knobs, and it's auto-limited so your sound stays loud without the ugly digital clipping you'd normally get from overcooking a signal.

Distortion adds harmonics that weren't in the original signal. In practice that means:

  • Warmth and glue on a clean DI, synth, or drum bus
  • Presence for a vocal or lead that's getting buried
  • Character — turning a sterile loop into something with grain and grit
  • Aggression for heavy drops, gritty bass, and lo-fi textures

Step by step

  1. Open the Distortion tool and load your audio.
  2. Set the amount of grit with Drive (0–100%, default 50%). Low values warm and thicken; high values push the sound into full saturation and fuzz.
  3. Shape the character with Tone (0–100%, default 50%). Lower Tone is darker and rounder; higher Tone is brighter and more aggressive.
  4. Preview, adjust to taste, then export.

The trick is balancing the two. A lot of Drive with a low Tone stays thick and warm; the same Drive with a high Tone gets spiky and aggressive.

Start from a preset

  • Overdrive — warm and pushed. The all-rounder for adding body without going harsh.
  • Fuzz — thick and gnarly. Great on bass, synths, and anything you want to sound broken in a good way.
  • Edge — bright and aggressive. Cuts through a busy mix and adds bite.

Tips for cleaner-sounding grit

  • Roll Tone down for warmth. If distortion sounds harsh or fizzy, pull Tone toward the low end before you back off Drive.
  • A little goes a long way on vocals. Try the Edge preset, then ease Drive back until the voice just starts to break up.
  • Bass loves Fuzz. Thick low-end distortion fills space and reads as loudness even at lower volume.
  • Stack subtly. A touch of Overdrive under a clean part adds glue without obviously sounding "distorted."

Bitcrush: 8-bit and chiptune crunch

That crunchy, retro-game sound comes from two kinds of damage: fewer bits (a coarser staircase for the waveform) and a lower sample rate (less detail per second). The Bitcrush tool does both. Drop in a melody, a drum loop, or a vocal, and you can take it from a touch of grit all the way to full NES chiptune.

Bitcrushing throws away resolution on purpose. The result is the lo-fi, digital crunch you hear in old game consoles and a lot of modern lo-fi and hyperpop:

  • Chiptune leads and basses with that classic 8-bit grit
  • Retro-game SFX from clean sounds
  • Lo-fi texture — a little crush adds character without going full retro
  • Aggressive digital grime for harsh, glitchy moments

Step by step

  1. Open the Bitcrush tool and load your sound.
  2. Set the resolution with Bits (2–12 bit, default 8). Fewer bits means a grittier, coarser sound. 8-bit is the classic chiptune zone; drop to 4 or lower for serious crunch.
  3. Add sample-rate reduction with Crush (0–100%, default 40%). More Crush means a dirtier, more aliased sound as you throw away detail.
  4. Preview and export.

The two knobs stack: Bits controls how coarse the waveform's steps are, while Crush controls how much fine detail gets thrown away. Together they decide whether you land on "clean game console" or "completely destroyed."

Start from a preset

  • 8-Bit NES — classic chiptune. The default starting point for that nostalgic console sound.
  • Atari — super crunchy at 4-bit. Coarser and grittier, like the earliest game audio.
  • Just Dirty — a little grit at 11-bit. Adds character without obviously sounding "8-bit."

Tips for better crunch

  • Chase the sweet spot with Bits first. Set the bit depth to taste, then add Crush for extra dirt. They interact, so small moves matter.
  • For subtle lo-fi, start at Just Dirty. 11-bit with a touch of crush adds vibe without screaming "retro."
  • Mono, simple parts crush cleanest. The fewer things happening, the more the crush reads as a feature rather than noise.
  • Pair it with a melody. A simple square-wave-style lead through 8-bit Bits is the fastest route to instant chiptune.

Noise Generator: white, pink, and brown

Need a clean wall of noise for focus, sleep, or masking a noisy room — or a hiss bed to tuck under a beat? You don't load a track for this one — the Noise Generator is a generator, not an effect. It creates the sound from scratch: pick a color, set a length, export. Common uses:

  • Focus and concentration while you work
  • Falling asleep (and helping babies sleep)
  • Tinnitus masking
  • Blocking out conversation, traffic, or a hum
  • Testing speakers and headphones with full-range sound

White vs. pink vs. brown, simply

  • White noise — equal energy across all frequencies. Crisp, bright, hissy. Think TV static.
  • Pink noise — softer and more balanced, with less harsh high end. Sounds natural, like steady rainfall.
  • Brown noise — deep and rumbly, weighted toward the low end. Like a waterfall or distant ocean.

There's no single "best" — pink and brown tend to feel calmer for sleep, while white is great for masking sharp sounds and testing gear.

The controls and steps

  • Color (0–100%, default ~50%) slides the character of the noise. Low values give you crisp white, the middle lands on balanced pink, and high values take you to deep brown. Just drag until it sounds right.
  • Length (5–120s, default 30s) sets how many seconds of noise to generate before export. Longer files loop more seamlessly for all-night use.

Open the tool (nothing to import), set Color, set Length, preview, then export your noise file.

Use the presets

  • Pink Noise — balanced and natural, the everyday choice.
  • Brown Noise — deep and rumbly for calm and sleep.
  • White Noise — crisp, full-range, great for masking and speaker tests.
  • Sleep Bed — long and deep brown, made to loop through the night.

For sleep, start with Brown Noise or Sleep Bed and keep the volume low — deep low-end content masks rumble without being fatiguing. For focus, many people prefer Pink Noise — present without the harsh hiss of full white. Testing speakers? White Noise exercises the full frequency range so you can hear rattles or dropouts.

Freeze / Drone: stretch a moment into a pad

Some of the prettiest ambient sounds come from freezing a single split-second of a song and stretching it into infinity. Instead of playing a track forward, the Freeze / Drone tool picks one point and holds it, smearing that tiny slice into a long, sustained tone. The result is an evolving ambient drone — a frozen pad with a glassy, slowly-shifting character. Lay it under the source for instant atmosphere, or run it on its own as a pure ambient bed. Great for:

  • Ambient intros and outros
  • Transitions and breakdowns between sections
  • Cinematic and atmospheric beds under vocals or beats
  • Turning a one-shot or sample into a sustained pad

The controls

  • Freeze (0–100%, default 30%) is where in the track you grab the moment. 0% freezes the very start; 100% freezes the end. Move it around to find a slice with the right pitch and tone — different moments freeze into very different pads.
  • Pad (0–100%, default 70%) blends the frozen pad against the original source. At 0% you hear the dry track; at 100% it's pure drone with no source left.
  • Length (4–20s, default 8s) sets how long the drone runs. Short for a quick swell, long for a sustained ambient bed.

Step by step

  1. Load your track into the tool.
  2. Set Freeze to choose the moment to grab. Sweep it around and listen — a sustained vowel, a chord, or a held note usually freezes most beautifully.
  3. Dial Pad to taste. Around the default 70% keeps a glassy pad dominant while leaving a hint of the source; push to 100% for a pure drone.
  4. Set the Length, preview, then export your pad.

Use the presets

  • Glass Pad — frozen and dreamy, the classic glassy ambient texture (keeps a touch of the source in the mix).
  • Pure Drone — all pad, no source, for a clean standalone bed.
  • Underbed — a subtle pad sitting quietly beneath the original.

Match the drone's pitch to your song's key by choosing a Freeze point that sits on a chord tone. For a pad that supports rather than dominates, use the Underbed preset and keep Pad lower. Longer Length settings give the drone room to evolve — great for slow intros.

Reverse & reverse-reverb swells

Reversed audio is one of those tricks that instantly sounds like a record. Vocals played backwards become eerie textures, a reversed cymbal becomes a riser, and a reversed chord sucks the listener into the next section. The Reverse tool flips any clip backwards, and it can do something most "reverse" buttons can't: build a real reverse-reverb swell that blooms into each hit.

At its simplest, reversing plays the audio from end to start. The attack of a sound (the sharp front of a drum hit, the consonant of a word) moves to the back, and the decay moves to the front. That swap is why reversed sounds feel like they're being pulled forward in time instead of pushed. It's useful for:

  • Transitions between sections of a song
  • Risers that lift into a drop or a chorus
  • Hidden-message fun with reversed speech
  • Ear candy — drop a reversed snare or vocal under a normal one

Step by step

  1. Open the Reverse tool and load your clip (a drum hit, a vocal phrase, a chord, or a whole loop).
  2. The only knob is Swell (0–100%, off by default). Leave it at 0 for plain backwards playback — clean, no reverb, just flipped.
  3. Push Swell up to bloom reverb in before each hit. The higher you go, the longer and bigger that sucked-in bloom becomes.
  4. Preview, then export.

Use the presets as a head start

  • Plain Reverse — just backwards, nothing added. Great for hidden-message effects and reversed textures.
  • Reverse Swell — reverb blooms in ahead of each hit for that cinematic intake of breath.
  • Riser — a big, sucked-in build. This is the one to reach for going into a drop.

Tips for better reverses

  • Short and punchy wins. Single hits, one-word vocals, and short chords reverse most musically. Long, busy clips just sound jumbled.
  • A reversed cymbal is the classic riser. Crash, reverse, add Swell, and lay it before a downbeat.
  • For vocals, watch your timing. When you reverse a phrase, the swell now leads the word — line that bloom up with the beat before it lands.
  • Stacking adds depth. Layer a reversed copy quietly under the original for a haunted double.

Layering textures

These tools get more interesting in combination. A touch of Overdrive under a bitcrushed lead adds body to the digital grit. A frozen Glass Pad sitting quietly under a verse gives a sparse arrangement instant atmosphere, and a reversed cymbal with Swell carries you into the chorus where that pad drops out. A short, quiet noise bed can glue a too-clean loop together the way tape hiss used to. The common thread: apply texture to individual elements, keep the subtler layers low, and let one bold texture lead at a time.
