Modes have a reputation for being the deep end of music theory, the thing you're "not ready for yet." That reputation is wrong. A mode is not a harder, scarier scale. It's the same handful of notes you already know, with a different note treated as home, and each home gives the music a different mood. By the end of this you'll know what Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian and the rest actually sound like, and the single note that gives each one its flavor.
Let's start one step back, because modes only make sense once a scale does.
What a scale actually is
A scale is a set of notes that sound good together, picked from the twelve notes available in Western music. Out of those twelve, you choose seven, and those seven become the "in-key" notes for a song. Melodies and chords built from them tend to agree with each other. Notes outside the set sound like wrong notes — sometimes usefully spicy, often just off.
So a scale is really a filter. Pick the right seven and everything you play lands in tune.
The major scale formula
The most common scale is the major scale. It's built by stepping up through the notes using a fixed pattern of whole steps (W, two frets / two piano keys) and half steps (H, one fret / one key):
W – W – H – W – W – W – H
Start that pattern on C and you get the white keys, no sharps or flats:

That's C major. The same formula starting on any other note gives you that key's major scale — that's why the formula matters more than memorizing notes. Major sounds bright, resolved, "happy." It's the default sound of pop, most worship music, and a huge chunk of everything else.
The natural minor scale
Minor sounds darker, sadder, more serious. The natural minor formula is:
W – H – W – W – H – W – W
Start it on A and, again, you get only white keys: A – B – C – D – E – F – G. That's A minor. Notice something: A minor uses the exact same notes as C major — it just starts in a different place. That relationship (every major key has a "relative minor" sharing its notes) is your first clue to how modes work.
Modes: same notes, different home
The whole idea of modes in one sentence: take the seven notes of a major scale, but start and rest on a different note, and you get a different mood.
The seven white keys give seven possible starting points, and therefore seven modes. They all use the white keys; only the "home" note changes:

Ionian is just major and Aeolian is just minor — you already know those two. The middle five are where the character lives. The trick to hearing each mode is to listen for the one note that makes it different from plain major or plain minor.
Dorian — minor, but hopeful
Dorian is a minor sound with one bright surprise: a raised (natural) 6th. Compare it to natural minor, which has a lowered 6th. That one lifted note keeps Dorian from sounding fully sad — it's wistful but not defeated. It's all over funk, jazz, soul, and a lot of cinematic and game music. If a minor groove sounds cool rather than depressed, it's often Dorian.
Phrygian — dark and tense
Phrygian is minor with a lowered 2nd (a half step right above home). That cramped interval at the bottom gives it a brooding, slightly menacing, flamenco-and-metal feel. It sounds exotic and heavy. Producers reach for Phrygian when they want tension and darkness without going fully horror-movie.
Lydian — dreamy and floating
Lydian is major with one note pushed up: a raised 4th (#4). That sharpened note removes the "pull home" that normal major has, so the scale seems to hover and shimmer. It's the sound of wonder — think wide film scores and ethereal synth pads. Bright like major, but weightless.
Mixolydian — bluesy major
Mixolydian is major with a lowered 7th (b7). Normal major's 7th leans hard back toward home; flattening it relaxes that pull and adds grit. The result is major-sounding but loose and bluesy — the backbone of rock, blues, funk, and a ton of folk. If a song feels happy but a little rough around the edges, suspect Mixolydian.
Aeolian and Locrian
Aeolian is natural minor — the standard sad scale. Locrian is the odd one out: its home chord is unstable (diminished), so it rarely works as an actual key center. Know it exists; you'll reach for it last.
How to actually use modes in Onomo
