What EQ actually is
Strip away the mystique: EQ is just volume control for different frequencies. A sound is made of many frequencies stacked together — deep lows, warm low-mids, present highs, airy top end. EQ lets you turn any of those ranges up or down independently. Too much bass? Turn the lows down. Harsh and piercing? Turn the highs down. That's the whole concept — you're adjusting the volume of parts of a sound, not the whole thing.
You do it with a few controls per band: pick the frequency you want to affect, then boost or cut it, and use the Q (bandwidth) to set how wide or narrow that adjustment is. Wide Q = a gentle, musical shift; narrow Q = a surgical poke at one specific frequency.

This is the mindset shift that changes everything: to make a sound stand out, cut the things competing with it — don't boost the sound itself.
Why? A few reasons. Cutting sounds more natural to the ear than boosting (boosts tend to sound artificial and harsh). Cutting preserves headroom — boosting everything just makes your whole mix louder and closer to clipping. And the real problem is usually masking: two sounds fighting in the same frequency range, so neither is clear. The fix isn't to make the one you care about louder there — it's to remove that range from the other one, opening a window for the sound you want to hear.
So when your vocal is buried, don't crank the vocal's presence — dip the instruments where the vocal lives. When the kick and bass are mushy together, don't boost the kick — carve a little out of the bass where the kick punches. Cut to create space, and the sound you care about comes through clearly without being louder. Reach for the cut first, every time.
Always EQ in context
The last crucial habit: make your EQ decisions with the whole mix playing, not on a solo'd track.
A sound that's EQ'd to perfection in solo will often be wrong in the mix, because mixing is about how sounds fit together, not how each one sounds alone. A vocal that's slightly thin by itself might be exactly right once the instruments fill in around it. So unmute everything, and judge each EQ move by what it does to the whole track. You're not crafting beautiful isolated sounds — you're crafting a mix where everything has its place.
A simple EQ workflow
Putting it together, a reliable order for each track:
- High-pass to cut low-end the sound doesn't need (everything but kick/bass).
- Cut the problems — find any boomy, muddy, boxy, or harsh frequency and dip it (sweep a narrow boost around to find the ugly spot, then cut there).
- Carve space — where two sounds clash, cut one to make room for the other.
- Then, sparingly, boost — only after cutting, add a gentle presence or air boost if the sound still needs to shine.
Notice that boosting is the last and smallest step. Cut first, cut most, boost least.
